SPAR Scotland’s Firewalk for Marie Curie

A team of more than 40 colleagues from leading Scottish wholesaler and convenience retailer, CJ Lang & Son Ltd, took part in a firewalk at their Dundee depot on Sunday 29th January 2023 to raise funds for Marie Curie.

The 40 volunteers from all areas of CJ Lang’s business – distribution, logistics, warehouse, head office and SPAR Scotland stores have raised £4,000 so far by walking over fire on Sunday for SPAR’s national charity partner Marie Curie.

The walk took place at CJ Lang’s distribution depot in Dundee on Sunday evening 29 January and everyone was brave enough to complete the heated fundraiser.

Facilitated by the event organisers Blaze, SPAR colleagues from across the estate had training and motivational exercises before watching the fire be lit. The brave charity fundraisers then walked across the hot embers with a piper on hand, to pipe the walkers across the fire.

Paula Middleton, Marketing Manager from CJ Lang said: “Marie Curie is our national charity partner and we do a lot to support the great work they do around the country.

“We had never done a firewalk so we were excited to step into the unknown. The firewalk was an exciting opportunity to not only challenge ourselves personally and tick it off our bucket lists, but to raise funds for our national charity partner, Marie Curie.

“All the money raised will help Marie Curie continue to provide vital end of life care for terminally ill people and their families during their final days, weeks and months.”

SPAR has raised £2.8 million for Marie Curie since support started in 2017.

End-of-life charity Marie Curie is currently preparing for the charity’s Great Daffodil Appeal taking place in March. It is Marie Curie’s flagship fundraiser, where supporters can receive an iconic daffodil pins in return for donations.

Marie Curie is dependent on public donations and last year the money raised helped the charity provide direct care to more than 46,000 people across the UK via its nine hospices and through overnight nursing care in people’s own homes.

Christine Connor, Corporate Partnerships & Philanthropy Manager Scotland, for Marie Curie added; As a Corporate Partnership Manager, working with CJ Lang is very much a “work family” experience and therefore sharing that on the night, included walking the walk too!

It was really uplifting to see the brave fundraisers families come out on a such a chilly night to support them. The timings could not have been any more perfect, in that at the same time as everyone faced the flames, it coincided with the times our nurses would be beginning their shifts in homes all across Scotland.

At Marie Curie we rely on donations to keep us doing the work that we do. It’s because of companies like CJ Lang & Son, that right now, in Dundee and across Scotland  people will be opening their doors to a Marie Curie nurse, with relief knowing that they’re not alone, that their loved one is going to get the care that they need tonight.

The team, has been amazing and monies raised will pay for 200 hours of direct care to patients and their families.”
