Halloween From Safety to Sweets: Trick-or-Treat Ideas For Little Terrors

It’s 6.30pm, you’re relaxed at home, warm and comfortable, engrossed in the TV. The tranquillity is disturbed when the doorbell goes. With a roll of the eyes, you rise slowly from your seat, met with an unnerving sound of laughter coming from outside the window... you put your mug of tea down and your heart starts to race. You slowly walk to the door and your shaking hand grips the handle. Gently you turn it and start to pull the door towards you – curiosity insists that you peek around the edge, but before you can, a loud piercing scream erupts from the doorstep – “TRICK OR TREEEEEAT?”. You’re taken aback by the gruesome figures before you, backed up by a tiny witch with a surprisingly cute little green face, who reaches forward with her bucket, hypnotising you, demanding you hand over your soul!!!

If that sounds scary, imagine how scary it would be if you can’t meet their demands? Ok, she doesn’t really want your soul – but you might feel like yours has been taken if you’re left looking down at disappointed faces.

All they’re really after is some tasty treats, the chance to dress up and startle grown-ups. Trick or treating is part of the charm of Halloween for little terrors, so to make sure yours, and your little visitors get what they’re after, here are some Terror-fic Trick-or-Treat ideas. From Trick-or-Treat safety advice for your little ones, to Trick-or-Treat sweets that you can stock up on, or make at home, to ensure you’re prepared when the doorbell rings.

It’s Scary Out There: How to Trick-or-Treat Safely

Though Trick-or-treating is fun and exciting, it probably wouldn’t be as exciting if it was called ‘walking the streets in the dark’. But essentially, that’s what your youngsters will be doing – so there are a few things you should do to make sure they don’t encounter any unwanted scares whilst they’re on their sweet scavenge.

  • Go with them: make sure the little demons and monsters are accompanied by an adult to keep them protected and advise on which houses they should approach, and which they should steer clear of due to elderly residents etc.
  • Plan their route: the fun will soon subside if your little ones have aching feet or a muddy costume. Choose routes you know, ideally containing generous residents you know, too.
  • Let there be light: carry a torch and add some reflective strips to your little ones’ Trick-or-Treat costume to ensure passing motorists can see them. And while we’re on the topic of costumes…
  • Keep costumes short: your little witch doesn’t want her dress dragging along the floor, and the mummy doesn’t want to unravel along the street. Long costumes can be a trip hazard, so make sure they can walk in them comfortably.
  • Choose face paint over masks: masks can easily complete a costume, but they also reduce visibility and ventilation. Without a mask, they can also put on their cutest expression to ensure a generous handful of Halloween sweets is forthcoming.
  • Check what they’ve been given: be sure to look through the sweets they have collected before they taste them. You never know, the odd trick may be included…
